History

It was 1820 in the Scottish town of Kilmarnock. John, or Johnnie, Walker’s father had just died, and the young man had to see that he became commercially successful. His remarkable ambition and sense for innovation paid off, because within a short time he bought a grocery store where he offered his own mixed whiskies. At that time there was mainly single malt whisky, but Johnnie Walker was too inconsistent. He hit the mark: everyone in the area wanted to buy his blended whisky. After Johnnie Walker’s death, his son and heir Alexander released the first commercial blend under the name Old Highland Whisky, which already bore the world-famous 24-degree angle label. His sons – Alexander II and George – finally changed the brand name to Johnnie Walker in 1909 and launched the varieties Red and Black Label. In the course of this, the striding Johnnie Walker, the mascot to be seen on every bottle, was also created.

Production

Even though most whisky fans buy Johnnie Walker Red Label, the drink is not a soulless mass commodity. On the contrary: compared to other whisky brands, the house produces the most scotch. It also has the world’s largest stock of reserve whiskies, some of which contain extremely rare drops from distilleries long since closed in Brora and Port Ellen.

Johnnie Walker Red Label is based on a brand mix of up to 30 different malt and grain varieties. It is a combination of both light whiskies from the east coast of Scotland and more peaty specimens from the west. Each drop must have been aged in oak barrels for at least three years before it can be called Scotch Whisky. Thanks to a mix of distillates from different regions, Johnnie Walker Red Label is an excellent drink with an incredible depth of flavour at a low price!

Taste

What can you expect in terms of taste with this mahogany-coloured drink? Let’s start classically with the smell, the nose: Here, sour fresh apple meets vanilla, caraway, pear and malt. On the palate, sour apple and vanilla are picked up again, while cinnamon, white pepper, toffee, caramel and sweet cereals are added. The finish of the Johnnie Walker Red Label is the highlight: a tasteful finish with smoke, fruits and the slightly bitter taste of apple peel. A very creamy experience that you should savour to the full if you buy the Red Label here. It is the perfect introduction for newcomers to Scotch Whisky, as you won’t be overwhelmed by peaty nuances. Enjoy the drink pure once. How you drink it is up to you: you can taste it completely pure at room temperature or with a few drops of water or ice cubes.

Cocktails

You don’t have to feel guilty if you want to use Johnnie Walker Red Label for mixing. With an excellent price-performance ratio, it is after all a very cheap Scotch Whisky, which most people buy for mixing. The traditional brand also knows this and offers some mixing suggestions itself. There is for example the “Rusty Nail”: Here you put 4.5 cl Johnnie Walker Red Label together with 1.5 cl Drambuie 15 YO whisky liqueur (which you can buy here) together with ice cubes in a mixing glass. Mix everything so that the ingredients get nice and cold, and then strain the mixture into a tumbler glass with a large ice cube. A cocktail cherry is suitable as a garnish. If you like it a bit more tingly, you can try a “Whisky Ginger Highball”. For this you need the following components:

• 4.5 cl Johnnie Walker Red Label
• 18 cl ginger ale
• a squeeze of fresh lime juice

Fill a highball or long drink glass with ice cubes and add all the ingredients. Stir the drink gently and garnish with a lime wedge. You already have a simple long drink for warm days or evenings!
