Aging
Its exceptional aroma is obtained during bottling by ageing in various barrels. First the Laphroaig PX Cask matured in old American oak barrels in which Bourbon had previously been stored. For a short time Laphroaig then filled it into its own Quarter Casks and finally, in the third step of the process, it matured in PX oak barrels. In these barrels, Pedro Ximénez’s sherry was once rare and particularly tasty. This special process gives the Laphroaig PX Cask its charming character, which always captivates with a slight sweetness.
Aroma
Laphroaig connoisseurs will not be surprised after opening the bottle. The smoke aroma immediately rises into the nose. Behind this, however, lies the complexity of this whisky: Raisins and the typical scent of sweet sherry give a hint that the Laphroaig PX Cask is something unique. This impression is supported by some liquorice and a hint of peat.
Taste
In the mouth the aromas unfold to an inspiring fullness. A lot of oak harmonizes wonderfully with the unmistakable sherry note. The sweet heaviness shimmers again and again through the smoke aroma and shows that the PX Cask is in a class of its own.
Finish
The complex combination of oak, smoke and sherry components also shows its full splendour in the long finish. A wonderful finish rounds off the special overall picture perfectly.
A lover’s piece
The Laphroaig PX Cask is certainly not one of the cheapest scotches on the market. It is worth its price but always. Especially since it comes in a 1 liter bottle. Also with this Laphroaig the unique peat, which occurs so only on the island Islay, comes through. But in addition to this characteristic feature of the Scottish distillery, this bottling also reveals particularly exciting and complementary taste components. This single malt Scotch Whisky should be a highlight, especially for lovers of a present note of sherry in whisky.
