Distillery
The distillery of The Balvenie is one of nine distilleries in the “Malt Whisky Capital of the World”. What is special about The Balvenie is that it is the only distillery in the Scottish Highlands that still produces parts of the malt on its own malting floors.
Aging
21-year-old The Balvenie Port Wood matures in rare Port wine barrels. The Balvenie Malt Master checks the content at regular intervals. A random sample is taken and checked. This ensures that The Balvenie 21 Port Wood retains its original characteristics while being improved by the character of the Port wine barrels.
The Balvenie 21 Port Wood gets its deep golden colour and complex aroma from the long maturation in the Port wine barrels.
Taste
The Balvenie 21 Port Wood exudes a soft smell of fruity raisins. This is accompanied by ripe notes of nutty dryness. Light nuances of passion fruit, marzipan and dried fruit are added. The nosing promises a complex and multi-layered whisky.
Aroma
Very present are the rich vanilla and roasted aromas that accompany every sip of The Balvenie 21 Port Wood. These are complemented by nuances of fresh spring and summer fruits that round off the taste. All in all, The Balvenie 21 Port Wood’s character is best described with creamy, silky-fruity and rich spicy notes.
The Balvenie 21 Port Wood is dry in the mouth but is very easy to drink.
Finish
In the finish, 21 year old The Balvenie Port Wood is long and smooth. The finish is soft and nutty and thus brings out the full potential of storage in the old Port wine barrels. The light oak tones are once again noticeable here.
